NODC at the UN events for the health of the ocean

16 June 2025

Over the past two weeks, NODC has been in Nice (France) to participate in two global events: the One Ocean Science Congress (OOSC) and the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3).

UNOC3 was jointly organised by France and Costa Rica ten years after COP21 and the Paris Agreement and brought together a wide range of stakeholders from all UN member states. They met to accelerate action and mobilise all stakeholders to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), i.e. to conserve and sustainably use the ocean. The Nice Ocean Action Plan will focus on raising ambition for ocean conservation, supporting the development of a sustainable blue economy and strengthening and disseminating marine science knowledge for better political organisation.

The OGS was represented by Cosimo Solidoro, Director of the Oceanography section, and Alessandra Giorgetti, Head of the National Oceanographic Data Centre.
Giorgetti contributed to the panel session entitled “Regional services as a building block of ocean data sharing”, organised by the Decade Ocean Data Sharing Coordination Office and the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). The workshop highlighted the crucial role of regional marine data services such as the EU public assets EMODnet and Copernicus Marine Service in providing findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable marine data and data products to meet society’s needs for marine knowledge. Watch what she presented "in this slide".

When asked about the main challenges in sharing data at regional and global level, Giorgetti replied: “Standardisation of monitoring programmes is key to obtain comparable data and facilitate their aggregation, harmonisation and validation.” She concluded by adding that “The marine knowledge value chain consists of many important links, including data originators, national data centres, regional coordinators and global data access services. To maintain and strengthen the chain, it is necessary to invest more and more in recognising and rewarding the efforts of all those who contribute to making data sharing a reality”.

"The One Ocean Science Congress" is a special UNOC3 event to provide the stakeholders with comprehensive scientific knowledge on the state and future development of the ocean. The Congress featured oral presentations, posters, and roundtable discussions to promote dialogue between science and society.
Giorgetti took part in the presentation of the poster on the "European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet)", which is entitled " EMODnet: An EU data service providing FAIR, integrated marine data for the global ocean data ecosystem".
In addition, Giorgetti gave the presentation "EMODnet as the EU data platform for marine litter data" in the session dedicated to the harmonisation of plastic pollution monitoring and assessment. Watch "the presentation".
Finally, she co-chaired the session "Plastic pollution: impacts, fate, and innovations" with Professor Daoji Li from Shanghai (China).
