The event “Environmental crisis: data requires a change of direction” organised by the NODC as part of Trieste Next 2025 was well attended in person and online. Speakers from various research and monitoring institutes in Italy provided the audience, both in person and online, with a comprehensive overview of the marine knowledge value chain. This connects observing systems that collect data in the field to open data management infrastructures and all those responsible for making decisions to address marine pollution and climate change. The event aimed to highlight scientific data demonstrating the urgent need to address the environmental emergencies affecting the planet responsibly. The speakers, experts in managing and processing scientific data worldwide, presented findings on climate change and marine plastic pollution from the latest reports published by the European Commission and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Special attention was given to the resulting impacts on society, the economy and the environment, as well as to the adaptive and mitigative solutions available through the sharing of reliable scientific data and the development of new technology.
