NODC at the Advanced Master in Sustainable Blue Economy

20 March 2023

On 17 March 2023, Marina Lipizer, a researcher at NODC, gave a lecture at the Advanced Master in Sustainable Blue Economy, which runs from January 2023 to May 2024. This is a consolidated high-level educational activity jointly organised by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS and the University of Trieste every year since 2018. The Master was ranked number 1 in the top 5 Master's programmes in the Blue Economy, according to Blue Jobs.

The Master is divided into three main pillars: 1. environmental sustainability and coastal planning, 2. legal framework, earth sciences and climate aspects and 3. marine biology and ocean observation.

In her presentation entitled "From Good Data ... To Good Decisions. From Data to Knowledge for Sustainable Blue Growth", some of the most important European and global infrastructures for open access to high quality marine data were presented, such as the Copernicus Marine Service and World Ocean Data. Data, data products and services offered by the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) were presented in detail. EMODnet is a network of organisations supported under the EU Integrated Maritime Policy since 2017. M. Lipizer spoke about the "collect once and use many times" philosophy that inspires the seven thematic lots. Finally, she informed about the new central portal that brings together all thematic data services in a single, integrated access point.
