Monitoring of microphytobenthos abundance and community composition has been carried out with an irregular frequency, from monthly to seasonal, in the Gulf of Trieste, from 2/1999 to 06/2005.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 7,100 records.

Geographic Coverage

The station AA1 (Latitude 45.436°N Longitude 13.19617°E), located in the Gulf of Trieste in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea, has been monitored for 3 years. The coordinates were measured by a GPS.

Study Area Description The station AA1 (Latitude 45.664°N Longitude 13.596°E), located in the Gulf of Trieste in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea, is a shallow coastal station (21 m depth) located at 8 Km from the coast.

Sampling Methods

KC Haps bottom corer, 13 cm internal diameter. The sampled layer consists of the upper 5 mm of the sediment which has been homogenized.

Study Extent Monthly sampling from 02/1999 to 03/2002; seasonal sampling from 05/2002 to 06/2005.

Method step description:

  1. Samples were fixed with Ca(HCO3)2-buffered formaldehyde (0.8% final concentration) and cell abundance and species composition of microphytobenthos were estimated according to Utermöhl’s method (1958), using an inverted microscope equipped with phase contrast, at 200-320-400x final magnifications.
