The project has been continuously financed since 1992 in the framework of the Research Area 'Geodesy and Geophysical Observatories' of the Italian Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA) and is managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) in the frame of a bilateral agreement between the OGS and the Instituto Antartico Argentino (IAA). It is focused on 3D structural modelling and on earthquake source studies in the sub-antarctic Scotia Sea region. Three permanent broad band seismic stations (Base Esperanza (ESPZ, Antarctic Peninsula), Ushuaia (USHU, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina), Base Orcadas (ORCD, South Orkney Is.)), constituting the ASAIN (Antarctic Seismographic Argentinian Italian Network) are operated by IAA personnel with the technical support of OGS to record regional and teleseismic earthquakes.During the 2001-2002 antarctic campaign ESPZ station has been temporarily closed and a new three component broad-band station has been installed at the Argentinian Base Jubany (JUBA, South Shetland Is.).To expand the ASAIN network to the Tierra del Fuego neighbouring area the installation of a new station is under way at Estancia Despedida (DSPA, 50 km. about from Rio Grande town) in the framework of a cooperation agreement with the Facultad de Ciencias Astronomicas y Geofisicas de la Universidad de La Plata, Argentina (FCAGLP). The Ushuaia and La Despedida stations constitute the first nucleus of a local network for the investigation of the Tierra del Fuego seismicity which produced in the past some very strong earthquakes (1949/12/17 magnitude 7.5). The installation of a third seismographic station on the southeastern tip of Tierra del Fuego is planned according to a recently signed agreement between the OGS and the Centro Austral de Investigaciones Geofisicas (CADIC (CONICET), Ushuaia, Argentina).A project for the installation at ORCD and DSPA stations of a remote data access facility using satellite communication techniques is in preparation.
