Description

Abstract
The MFSTEP Project, funded by the European Commission V Framework Programme Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, aims to the development of an operational forecasting system for the Mediterranean Sea based upon three main components: a) the Near Real Time Observing system; b) the numerical forecasting systems at basin scale and for regional areas; c) the forecast products dissemination/exploitation system. Objective of MFSTEP WP4 - MEDARGO is to set up the subsurface profiling floats monitoring system, to provide temperature and salinity profile data in near-real time. Two types of profiling floats are operated, the APEX and the PROVOR. All floats are equipped with Sea-Bird CTD sensors They are programmed in the 'Park and Profile' configuration with a neutral parking depth of 350 m (near the salinity maximum of the Levantine Intermediate Water) and a maximum profiling depth of 700 m, with total cycle periods of 3.5, 4 and 7 days. When at surface, the floats are located by, and transmitted data, to the Argos system onboard the NOAA satellites. The data are processed and archived in near-real time at the CORIOLIS Data Center (Brest, France) and are disseminated on the GTS following the standards of the international ARGO program. Backup archival and processing is also done at OGS.
