Summary

Progetto Finalizzato Oceanografia e Fondi Marini, sponsored by the Italian CNR - In the period 1976-1980, the Stazione Oceanografica of C.N.R. and the Laboratorio per lo Studio dell'Ambiente Marino of C.N.E.N. (the forerunner of ENEA) began a series of sedimentological, current and hydrographic measurements in the Eastern Ligurian basin (the coastal area off La Spezia) in order to identify the local water masses and to follow their evolution throughout the year. The current and hydrographic measurements taken cover almost all the seasons of the year. CTD measurements were carried out using a Neil Brown conductivity-temperature profiler. The salinity, density, specific volume, buoyancy frequency, sound velocity and potential temperature of the water were calculated from these. The data set consists of depth series at 1 meter intervals of the measured and the calculated parameters. The data set is provided with latitude and longitude in degrees and time in GMT. The geographical positions of the stations close to coast were determined by radar and checked as often as possible against Loran C readings. Four cruises were conducted, the first from 3-5 April 1978 (113 hydrographic stations), the second from 11-19 April 1979 (160 stations), the third from 27-31 May 1980 (72 stations) and the fourth from 11-14 December 1980 (65 stations).
