Summary

Monitoring of chemical, hydrological, biological and geological features in the Ross Sea, in the framework of Italian Research Programme in Antarctica (PNRA) - The distribution of microzooplankton populations was studied during the Italian expeditions (1987/88; 1988/89) in Antarctica (Ross Sea). Microzooplankton samples were collected at three depths (0, 50 and 100 m), at 12 offshore stations during the first expedition; and at three depths (surface, intermediate and bottom) at 2 stations closer to the coast during the second expedition. The samples, collected with sampling bottles, were filtered with a 20 micrometre mesh and preserved in 4 per cent buffered formaldehyde. For our counting we considered the whole microzooplanktonic population consisting of all the ciliates, including the tintinnids, the other protozoans and the larvae of metazoa. We have determinated 6 genera and 17 species of tintinnids, 10 genera of ciliates other than tintinnids. The community structure was very simple with the typical Antarctic species.
