Description

Summary
The phytoplankton distribution was analyzed in different conditions of thermohaline stratification in the framework of the multidisciplinary monitoring program of the Adriatic Sea scheduled to determine the current state of the ecosystem and pollution in relation to its basic hydrological features and dynamics. The original data were controlled, analyzed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal quality control responsibility. The phytoplankton samples were collected during 5 seasonal cruises. 2 hydrographic surveys were concerned with the summer of 1983 and 1984; 2 the autumn of 1979 and 1989; 1 the spring of 1983. All cruises were concerned with the Northern Adriatic (4 transects), whereas the cruises spring 1983, summer 1984 and autumn 1989 comprise also the transect Pescara-Sibenik in the Middle Adriatic. The data are stored per station, per cruise and ship (institution). Approximately 90% of stations coverage is concurrently with the CTD stations. The data set comprises over 110 stations where more than 260 samples have been collected at surface and on the bottom. The transect Pescara-Sibenik occupied during the autumn cruise 1989 was monitored at 10 levels. The data are supplied by 3 Italian institutions: CNR, Istituto di Biologia del Mare, Venezia; Dipartimento di Biologia, Universita' di Trieste; Dipartimento di Biologia, Universita' di Padova.
