Description

Summary

The alkalinity is defined as the quantity of hydrogen ions in milliequivalents to neutralize the weak bases in 1 kg of water and is a basic parameter in the approach to most biochemical processes involved in carbon cycling, from production to mineralization of organic matter. The analytical method was a Gran titration on 25 ml water samples, according to the methods reported by Giordani et al. (1992), pH measurements were also carried out. The titrations have been completely carried out on board, immediately after the water sampling. From alkalinity data, pH, in-situ temperature and salinity of the water sample, CO2 has been calculated on board through equilibrium constants and this parameter can be used to estimate primary production by 14C in-situ incubations.
