Description

Summary

POEM project is an international effort devoted to studying the circulation of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Participating countries are Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Turkey, United States of America, Yugoslavia. Various oceanographic cruise are organized every year in different areas of the Eastern Mediterranean. The IMO-IUN has been dealing with cruises in the Strait of Sicily and, occasionally in the Ionian Sea. Instruments are calibrated and intercalibrated on a regular basis. Derivation of salinity and density values from temperature and conductivity is carried out according to UNESCO standard algorithms. Standard meteorological observations complete the station records.
