Descriptions:
From August 2014 to November 2015, seafloor litter monitoring surveys were conducted in 11 locations (121 hauls in total) included in the territorial waters of 5 countries of the Adriatic-Ionian macroregion (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece) in the framework of DEFISHGEAR project (www.defishgear.net). Different vessels (i.e. fishing and research) with a mean length of 22 ± 7 m were used, all equipped with a bottom otter trawl net. Hauls covered a depth range from 10 to 281 m. Each haul was done at a constant depth and along a rectilinear path. Hauls' mean length was 2698 ± 687 m, the mean towing time was 34 ± 7 min at a mean towing speed of 2.6 ± 0.3 knots. All items larger than 2.5 cm were sorted from the catch, identified and total weights per material were recorded. For further information, see Fortibuoni, T. et al. (2019). A harmonized and coordinated assessment of the abundance and composition of seafloor litter in the Adriatic-Ionian macroregion (Mediterranean Sea).
