A joint effort between EMODnet Physics and EMODnet Chemistry is under development to release a series of more exhaustive river proxy runoff products (based on a simple MOHID Water model) that progressively includes fresh water outflow, total suspended matter outflow and chemicals (nitrogen and phosphorous) outflow. This Proxy product will be configured and calibrated by river runoff (or river water level) data as gathered by EMODnet Physics, river Biogeochemical data (nutrients) as gathered by EMODnet Chemistry, and the EMODnet Total Suspended Matter (TSM) product. This way a number of river proxy products will be generated. To make these new products, both EMODnet lots are working to compile and make available an in-situ data collection of the physical and chemical components as close as possible to mouths of major rivers. For EMODnet Chemistry this implies extra efforts for gathering and populating chemistry observation. Nutrients concentrations at river mouths will be used to produce special higher resolution maps at river mouths, while river flows and nutrients measured at the exit of the drainage basin in proximity of the river mouth will be used to compute nutrients loads in selected points. The development of these new products will follow a stepwise approach starting from the release of the updated river proxy product of the physical parameters, the inclusion of some chemical parameters as a second step, and sediments as the final step. The very first action of the process is the selection of major rivers, considering the geographical distribution, data existence and water discharge levels. The detailed inventory of the existing geoportals, databases, projects and publications of freshwater and riverine inputs to the sea will be the starting point.
