EMODnet Chemistry: open and trusted data, products and services for understanding the evolution of marine water quality. This is the title of the presentation given by Megan Ann French, researcher at OGS that coordinates EMODnet Chemistry, during the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS) Workshop VII on 12 October this year.
From 9 to 13 October, the workshop explored Ocean Best Practices to find some 'common' solutions to the 10 selected challenges set by the UN Ocean Decade.
Each session addresses questions such as “What kind of ocean BP should be developed for important issues such as climate change, energy and environment?“ or “Where are the gaps in BP across disciplines?” and also “Are BP transversal or still siloed?”.

Various representatives of the European Marine Observation and Data network (EMODnet) participated in the session dedicated to Challenge 8 of the UN Ocean Decade: Create a digital representation of the ocean. In particular, French explained the work done by EMODnet Chemistry on standardisation, harmonisation and quality control of data collections and derived data products on marine water quality.

French highlighted that the OBP repository already contains EMODnet Chemistry guideline documents on data preparation and quality control procedures for contaminants, eutrophication, acidification and marine litter. Nevertheless, there is still much to be done. In this context, she shared that a new element has recently been added to the data flow: a “questionnaire” that provides a record of field and laboratory information for chemical parameters submitted by a data producer. She said that the questionnaire will help improve transparency of data quality, reliability and comparability.
