Alessandra Giorgetti and Chiara Altobelli from the Italian National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODCs), managed by OGS, answered these questions at the event “Let’s get marine data free” dedicated to general public. The so called “blue appetizer” took place on 11 June 2021 and is included in the rich agenda of “MareDireFare”, the Festival of the Sea, organized in Trieste to celebrate the start of the Decade of the Oceans, to reflect on their conservation and the future of marine resources.

OGS brought the example of the environmental and sanitary emergency occurred in the Bay of Minamata (Japan) in 1950s, due to contaminated sea waters, to explain how fundamental is the work of storing, validating and sharing marine data, carried out by the NODCs and the EMODnet Chemistry, to face emergencies like this one
